Easter Group

The Easter Group is an ecumenical community of faith whose mission is to strive to end extreme poverty and empower people, resulting in a rebirth of hope. In support of the Millennium Development Goals, we commit to identifying and implementing local projects that serve those in need. Our actions are for the benefits of all regardless of personal faith, culture, or beliefs.

Anyone interested in pursuing our goals is invited to attend our meetings and join us in our efforts. The 2009 Homeless Summit was sponsored by the Easter Group (see below). Read more about the MDGs and our goals on the About Us page.
Homelessness

Definition of homelessness:

According to the reauthorized McKinney-Vento Law, a school-age child or youth is considered homeless when their living situation involves one of the following due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason.

  • A shelter (i.e. SAFV)
  • A hotel or motel
  • Unsheltered (vehicle, trailer, campground, boat under certain conditions)
  • Doubled-up (with friends or relatives due to lack of affordable housing)
  • Inadequate conditions (overcrowded, lack of heat, electricity, or water)
  • Unaccompanied youth, couch surfer, or a runaway
The Homeless Summit, Advance Planning for the Care of the Homeless in Sitka was held in Sitka on October 29th, 2009. The Summit was sponsored by the Easter Group to make progress on the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals relating to poverty, hunger, shelter, equality and education. The next Summit will be held in the Fall, 2012. Listen to the KCAW radio series on "Homelessness in Sitka" by Ed Ronco.
