Homelessness
Definition of homelessness:
According to the reauthorized McKinney-Vento Law, a school-age child or youth is considered homeless when their living situation involves one of the following due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason.
- A shelter (i.e. SAFV)
- A hotel or motel
- Unsheltered (vehicle, trailer, campground, boat under certain conditions)
- Doubled-up (with friends or relatives due to lack of affordable housing)
- Inadequate conditions (overcrowded, lack of heat, electricity, or water)
- Unaccompanied youth, couch surfer, or a runaway
The
Homeless Summit, Advance Planning for the Care of the Homeless in Sitka was held in Sitka on October 29th, 2009. The Summit was sponsored by the Easter Group to make progress on the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals relating to poverty, hunger, shelter, equality and education.
